The engine records contained within the searchable database represent the beginnings of a project to record electronically information which is already widely available on road steam engines.
From a research viewpoint this offers opportunities to trace information quickly and easily about where an engine worked, its owners and other engines working within the same fleet or in the same area.
It will never be possible to include every road steam engine that was ever built, simply because much of the information was never preserved. However, it is hoped that by putting the information online it will become available to a wider audience, who may have new information to add to what is recorded here. If you have knowledge to add to the information shown here, please email resources@steamscenes.org.uk. No information has been recorded regarding engine ownership in the preservation era; a cut-off date of 1955 has been applied within the database. Anyone who wishes to find the current location for engines still in existence should consult The Traction Engine Register (published by Southern Counties Historic Vehicles Preservation Trust, latest edition 2004).
